Today, a meeting of the city accessibility committee took place, during which we focused on the key issue – creating a real, rather than declarative, barrier-free environment in Kyiv.
As the director of the the Municipal scientific research institute “Scientific research institute of socio-economic development of the city”, I would like to emphasize: accessibility of urban space is the basic standard of a modern city, which determines the level of its humanity and responsibility.
One of the central issues was the discussion of the results of monitoring the degree of barrier-freeness of physical environment objects and services for people with disabilities for 2025. This analysis allowed not only to assess the current state of accessibility, but also to clearly outline systemic problems that require immediate response. Special attention was paid to the issue of checking the condition of special tactile lanes in the Kyiv City. This is an important element of urban infrastructure that ensures safe and independent movement of people with visual impairments. We agreed to strengthen quality control of their arrangement and maintenance, as well as to conduct a comprehensive inventory of such elements in different areas of the city. Barrier-free is not about individual solutions. It is about a systemic transformation of the urban environment. Kyiv is consistently moving along this path.
